Canada settling in for the long haul; Its Relationship with the US May Never be the Same (View from the North - recorded on 5/19/2025). The host for this show was Jay Fidell. The guest was Ken Rogers.
The discussion was: Retired Canadian businessman Ken Rogers helps us follow the continuing contention between the US and Canada, how the new Prime Minister Mark Carney did facing down Trump when he met with him in the Oval Office, the extent to which US tariffs are hurting the Canadian economy or affecting public opinion in Canada. We touch on Carney's recent cabinet appointments, and the visit by King Charles, and how these things reflect or effect Canada's contention with the US. We discuss the regrettable comments of Pete Hoekstra, Trump's new ambassador to Canada (‘It’s Outrageous that you Banned American Products from Your Shelves’), how Hoekstra has tamped down comments about annexation but has failed to say when the tariffs will come off, and the reactions of Canadian officials and the public to his remarks.
The takeaway was: Canada is our most important neighbor and trading partner and we need to keep track of the disruptions Trump is causing to that relationship.
