Is Vietnam Still our Best Friend in Southeast Asia; The Evolution of its Relations with the US, and China (Global Connections - recorded on 6/12/2025). The host for this show was Jay Fidell. The guest was Carl Baker.
The discussion was: Carl Baker, senior advisor of Pacific Forum, helps us understand how Vietnam is evolving these days in a rapidly changing world. How is its manufacturing and export economy doing. How is its tourism industry doing. What is the status of its tariff negotiations with Trump and its agreement to buy $3 billion of American goods. What is it doing in its efforts to reclaim areas of the South china Sea. What is the status of its relationship with Beijing. Where does it stand on the global stage and with other countries in Southeast Asia.
The takeaway was: Vietnam has been a diplomatic and economic friend of the US since shortly after the 'American' War ended 50 years ago. We need to follow how it is doing now in order to preserve and that relationship.
