Getting Current on the Philippines; How Are They Doing in the Contention with China (Global Connections - recorded on 7/3/2025). The host for this show was Jay Fidell. The guest was Carl Baker.
The discussion was: Carl Baker, senior advisor of Pacific Forum, helps us understand the geopolitical issues involving the Philippines. What's the role of the Philippines as a strategic ally of the US and as a location for US bases. Why is China being so provocative in the South China Sea, especially near the Spratly Islands and Scarborough Shoal and involving the Sierra Madre. How well are the Philippines doing in defending themselves against these provocations. What else should they do. Is the US helping. How can the US provide greater help. What other steps is China taking to gain influence and power in the Philippines. How is the economy of the Philippines doing. How much civil unrest is going on in the countryside. Are they affected by Trump's tariffs and are they negotiating with other trading partners. Why aren't the Philippines part of the Quad for maritime security. How is the Marcos government doing. Have they recovered from the repression of the Duterte government. What about civil liberties. Are journalists like Maria Ressa free to say and write what they want. Do they have special exposure to climate change, extreme weather and natural disasters. Are Americans immigrating to the Philippines. Do Filipinos have problems immigrating to the US these days.
The takeaway was: The Philippines is an important strategic ally in the Pacific, and we need to follow what is going on there and maintain good relations and cooperative security with them.
