First Amendment Under Attack, Again; Trump's Move to Control Media (American Issues Take One - recorded on 1/29/2025). The hosts for this show were Tim Apicella and Jay Fidell. The guests were Benjamin Davis, Chuck Crumpton and Jeff Portnoy.
The discussion was: In football and basketball there is a term known as the ' juke'. It's when a runner appears to run down the field/court in one direction then suddenly pivots into the opposite side of travel. It's an attempt to mislead the opponent. So goes Executive Order signed on Jan 20, 2025, Restoring Freedom of Speech and Ending Federal Censorship. The main purpose of the order is to prevent government censorship of social media platforms. Also, the new AG , Pam Bondi will look at the past four years to determine if the Biden Administration shut down free speech as it pertains to alternate vaccine information and Jan6. The juke comes into play when Trump stated he wanted to pull the FCC license of ABC News for fact checking during the presidential debate, and threatening MSNBC for their reporting of the campaign, Trump's defamation lawsuit suit against ABC News. Other media outlets have bent the knee to Trump hoping they do not invoke his ire and wrath. Jeff Bezos, owners of the Washington Post did not allow the paper to endorse a candidate. The LA Times did the same. So, what is it? Expanded freedom of speech as with the recent Executive Order or intimation of media outlets that are critical of Trump?
The takeaway was: Despite what appears to be an expansion of our First Amendment Rights from government censorship via Trump's recent Executive Order, it may be a smoke screen of Trump's desire to shut down mainstream media and gain control of social media platforms such as Meta, X, Instagram, Tic Tok, YouTube.
